In 1929 it was re established as the Thomond Archaeological Society. While this name was geographically accurate in the sense that its membership was primarily from the North Munster region it became increasingly clear that it did not reflect adequately the current interests and activities of the Society and in 2004 it was decided to add Historical to the name of the Society.
The Society continues its strong focus on archaeology and retains its interest in architecture, folklore, folk life, place names, numismatics and other kindred studies in addition to History.

In 1973 it was decided that the Society should have an emblem and an insignia that would be worn by the President on official occasions. On the suggestion of John Hunt, then a Vice-President of the Society, it was decided that its design should be based on the Gleninsheen gorget.
This late-bronze-age object is an outstanding example of the craftsmanship and skill of Ireland’s prehistoric goldsmiths. It is also particularly associated with the Thomond region. The silver gilt insignia was by Peter Donovan of Kilkenny. The emblem is used on our stationary, membership card and journal.
